The Gunditjmara Community have received the 2023 UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri Prize for Cultural Landscape. The biennial international prize recognizes the long-standing care of by the Gunditjmara of their Country on which the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape. The site has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 2019. The prize was received by Uncle Denis Rose on behalf of the 2023 Laureate at a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 16 November 2023.
Congratulations to the Gunditjmara Community on this international recognition of their centuries long care and steadfast commitment to Culture and Country.
They have joined the small group of communities caring for World Heritage listed properties which have been afforded this prize.
