The webinar is an opportunity for the public – practitioners and scholars alike – to hear from members of UN human rights bodies before the end of the year for panel discussion on culture as a global public good in light of the UNESCO World Conference on Culture and Arts Education 2024 Framework, the UN Summit for the Future 2024 final documents, and work being done for Mondiacult 2025 Barcelona and the new SDGs. The Final Declaration of the Mondiacult 2022 in Mexico City identified six priority areas – cultural rights, culture in the digital era, the cultural dimensions of climate change, cultural economics, heritage in crisis, illicit trafficking and destruction of cultural property, and integrating culture in education.
Panellists will be invited to consider the work of their human rights bodies in the field of culture during the last year, achievements and highlights, challenges, and priorities for the next cycle.
The three panellists are members of key UN human rights bodies working in this field:
- Professor dr Yvonne M Donders, Member of the UN Human Rights Committee, Chair International Human Rights and Director Amsterdam Graduate School of Law, University of Amsterdam
- Professor dr Dalee Sambo Dorough, Iñupiaq advocate for Indigenous rights, Expert Member of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Senior Scholar and Special Advisor on Arctic Indigenous Peoples, University of Alaska Anchorage.
- Professor dr Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights and Director of Research, Brunel Law School, United Kingdom.
Moderator will be Ana Filipa Vrdoljak, Professor of Law, UNESCO Chair of International Law and Cultural Heritage and coordinator of the UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies, University of Technology Sydney.
